Our
Experience with our Horses
Our
first hand experience with sand colic occurred
in 2003 when we were back East visiting family.
My wife Ally received a call that there was something
wrong with her mare, Maggie. She was lying down
and appeared very weak. We called our veterinarian
and they rushed her to emergency horse services
for a more thorough examination and x-rays. Hours
later, the news came, that the blockage was severe,
it ruptured her intestine, they were twisted up
and she couldn’t be saved. It was devastating
losing Maggie and not being able to do anything
about it. We later learned that the build up of
the sand in her system most likely began years
ago in the pasture where she grazed and was further
compounded by the sandy ground in her paddock.
The
following year, our family’s Welsh pony,
Mulan began acting peculiar and we immediately
suspected colic. The signs were diarrhea, lack
of appetite and her not being her mischievous
self. We were very fortunate in that we caught
it early. Emergency treatment and a couple of
thousand dollars later, there was a good chance
for a full recovery, however, the post colic treatment
over the next several days would prove to be crucial
and challenging for her long-term recovery.
Recovery
Challenges
When
Mulan returned home, there was a lot of concern
that she wasn’t through the woods yet and
we needed to keep a close watch on our girl. Our
veterinarian recommended a daily routine of mild
exercise, plenty of water, bran, mineral oil and
psyllium. The first day went like this:
Ally
mixed up a soupy bowl of bran, water and mineral
oil in a large feed bowl. Mulan sniffed at it,
took a couple of slurps and then flipped the bowl
over with her front hoof. Needless to say, it
didn’t work out too well. Off I went back
to the drug store to buy more mineral oil at eight
dollars a quart. Thirty minutes later I returned
and Ally mixed up another batch of bran mash for
Mulan. The second round of treatment went a little
better as we closely protected the bowl from spilling.
While she ate more of the bran-mineral mash, she
eventually picked up the bowl with her mouth and
tossed it across the pen.
The
Original Mowl®
Horse Feeder Solution
As
a result of the challenges we experienced in treating
Mulan’s bout with colic, we needed come
up with a horse feeding solution that would make
it easier to administer her treatment without
most of it going to waste. That is when we invented
the “Mowl”, a mat/bowl combination
that secured the bowl from moving, spilling, flipping
or tipping while she fed from it. It proved to
be so successful in the treatment in her recovery
from colic, that we patented our invention, The
Original Mowl®.
This secure ground level horse feeder solves the
many of the challenges in caring for, feeding
